Intent

At Four Lanes Infant School it is our intent to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination. We encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations and develop the way children perform their skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities. We demonstrate to our pupils how to improve the quality and control of their performance as well as teaching children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise. We develop our pupils’ enjoyment of physical activity through creative and imaginative activities both in games, dance and gymnastics. We embed an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success. We strive to promote health and exercise throughout our school by celebrating the sporting achievements of our pupils both in and out of school.

Implementation

In the Early Years, PE is taught in a weekly discrete taught session that focuses on developing body control, spatial awareness and balance. Lessons are planned and informed from guidance such as ABC- Achieving body control from Solent Therapy pack and Twinkl Move PE planning. As well as this session children in the Early Years have daily access to the outside area where they are free to move around in a range of ways. We promote being physical by having a specific physical area that gives the children a range of opportunities to climb, balance, run, lift, pedal, throw and kick.

In Key Stage One the children are taught PE in twice weekly discrete lessons that allow children to learn and apply new skills. The lessons are taught from the scheme of learning created by Twinkl Move PE. The extensive grounds gives us opportunities to explore and learn outdoors. Our outdoor woodlands provides us with places to climb, balance, weave and jump, with visits to the woods happening weekly. PE skills are also promoted during play and lunchtimes where the children are encouraged to play games with their peers or to use the trim trail and climbing equipment. They are taught how to safely navigate the climbing equipment and show that they can do so with increasing skill. Within the Science, PSHE and DT curriculum we discuss the importance of a healthy and balanced diet and how eating too many sugary or fatty foods can have a detrimental effect on our physical and mental health.

Impact

By the time the children leave KS1 they will be able to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.
