Intent

At Four Lanes Infant School our pupils will develop the confidence to take risks, express themselves freely and to fully embrace and enjoy the creative side of learning in art. They will acquire the knowledge and skills to invent and create different types of artwork using a wide variety of techniques and materials. Exposure to the creative works of a range of artists and designers will enable them to foster an appreciation of different forms of art, design and expression and allows them to evaluate their own work and make links to others.

Implementation

At Four Lanes Infant School the art curriculum is taught through discrete art lessons linked to the overarching topic. In Early Years children are given exposure to a range of materials and skills that they can explore through self-initiated play and learning. In Key Stage 1 art and design units are taught each half term. Children embed and further develop any previously taught skills in painting, drawing, sculpture, printing, collage and textiles as specified in the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. We encourage children to express themselves and produce high-quality pieces of work in a variety of media that they can be proud of. At Four Lanes Infants children are given opportunities to discuss, critique, appreciate and evaluate their own creations and the work of professional artists.

Impact

When pupils leave us at the end of KS1 they will be:

  • able demonstrate resilience and security in the subject, by taking risks, problem solving and being curious.
  • able to talk about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.
  • able to review and refine their work with self and or peer assessment and teacher feedback.
