Music at Four Lanes Infant School

Intent

At Four Lanes Infant School, we want all children to develop and explore music with increasing understanding and enjoyment.  Children will learn to play un-tuned percussion instruments in a range of group situations with increasing control to develop their performance skills.  The older children will have opportunity to learn a tuned instrument and work towards a performance.  We will develop our children’s enjoyment and love for music through interactive, creative and imaginative activities. Children will be able to sing, create and compose music, experiment and be able to explore musical instruments and how music is created and produced. We strive to establish a high profile of music throughout our school and celebrate the musical achievements of our children both in and out of school.

Implementation

At Four Lanes Infant School, we deliver the music curriculum through class music lessons.  These lessons focus on listening to a variety of stimuli to explore the different dimensions and skills of music.  We will develop children as early musicians and performers using singing and instruments, with opportunities to apply their knowledge through both performance and composition.  There are opportunities for children to perform throughout the school year in various assemblies and productions such as at Christmas and an end of year performance by Year 2.  We will provide opportunities for children to experience live music by inviting performers into school e.g., Hampshire Music Service and Anvil Arts.  Planning follows a curriculum map and provides a progression of skills throughout the school.  Learning in each year group builds upon previous knowledge and skills to ensure that each child progresses from their various starting points.  Children gain musical knowledge, master skills, plan, prepare and perform.  Children learn to play a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments in lessons.  In Year 2 children will learn to play the recorder as part of their music curriculum. In addition to the school curriculum, children have the opportunity to join out of school choir and take part in various performances in the local community including the Basingstoke Music and Arts Festival.

Impact

When pupils leave us at the end of KS1, they will:

  • Have learned to use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
  • Have learned to play tuned and un-tuned instruments musically.
  • Have developed the skill of listening with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music.
  • Have had opportunity to experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.
  • Have had opportunity to perform to an audience.
